Candelabra Buying Guide
Not only that Candelabras are highly exclusive, they also have quite a tradition to back them up. The first Candelabras appeared as early as 400 B.C. according to several different sources. The amount of luxury and grace they bring in is more than enough to secure their spot in just about any home. They can be used on many different occasions; however, the combination that mixes them with candles is the one that I would highly recommend. You can easily use candelabras to get your sweet-looking design, and you can even relieve some of the “ancient” times by creating a very specific atmosphere with one of the more exotic candelabra types. You need to know what exactly do you want from your candelabra, and you also need to know the basic attributes of the type/model you are interested in. Only then you will be able to bring the best decision.
Candelabra Type
There is a whole bunch of different candelabra types available out there, and each of them caters to a specific set of individual needs. It doesn’t really matter if you need just one single candelabra for a particular table, or a bigger number to provide a good light support for any (bigger) event – the chances are good that you will find what you need. If you are looking for candelabra that will be used on a wedding and/or some “middle age” inspired event, you may want to check out floor candelabras. A good number of them have stable feet and/or solid bases that allow them to hold up on their own, but the so-called “clamping floor candelabras” require additional support to hold up properly.
Tabletop candelabras are also fairly popular, and they are great choices if you want basic (but quality) candelabras that will be effectively used on your dining table, for example. On the other hand, cake candelabras are quite self-explanatory if you look at their name, as they are intended to be placed on birthday cakes.
Candelabra Size
Yet another important factor that needs to be carefully considered is the size itself. How many arms does a particular candelabra type have is also very important, and ideally, you should always consider the size of your environment before going for particular types. For example, if the environment is huge, you will also want to get a huge candelabra as well, as a small one will just end up being “jammed” and inappropriate. Also make sure to look at the candle holder on each of the candelabra arms, and make sure that their size is appropriate as well.
Candelabra Finish
This is a very important parameter, as it can easily measure out how much the particular candelabra suits the overall environment. In a Halloween setting or some dark medieval environment, for example, you should aim to have black candelabras to fit the theme appropriately. Another good usage of black candelabras is on the weddings. It is very easy for the “dark themed” light holders to stand out in a setting where white, silver, gold, and pastel colors dominate the place. Crystal candelabras, on the other hand, are pretty much “universal” and they suit just about any environment. And if you want to make an impact that suggests rich tradition and an ambient of historical background, then a golden finish is a perfect way to achieve that.
Candelabra and sterling silver candlesticks are often used in a pair to create a stronger impact, and they are both suitable for just about every occasion. The décor that they offer is a high-quality one and is especially great when they are used on anniversary events and/or weddings in general. Sterling silver candlesticks are just so common nowadays that you can’t think of a special event that doesn’t include them.
Buying these candlesticks can be an issue if you are not familiar with sterling silver or candlesticks in general, but down below I will address these issues appropriately in order to help you out in your buying process as much as possible.
Understanding Candlesticks and Candelabra
Candlesticks are basically candle holders. They are very often made of sterling silver (I already mentioned those) and brass, however, there is a wide variety of different materials used here. The candle itself is usually placed in the middle of the candlestick, and that is where it is used to power up the lighting for the environment. If more candlesticks are bundled up together, then we use the term candelabrum. Many different individual candelabrums form up the products that we know as candelabras. Candelabra itself can be put on the ceiling and (more commonly) on the table, and that is where it provides a specific atmosphere and light for the particular setting.
Understanding Sterling Silver
Sterling silver represents a denoted piece of jewelry (or other similar material) that has 92.5 % of silver and 7.5 % of copper (typically). The reason why clean silver isn’t used here is basically the fact that a stronger piece of silver is required, and that is why materials (such as the mentioned copper) are added to strengthen them and to provide a good longevity for the customers. The US government uses a 92.5% silver purity national standard.
Every candelabrum and/or a candlestick that meets these criteria should have a stamp that assures that the required quality is provided. You can typically find “925/1000”, “sterling” or another similar stamp. This is the very basic thing that every quality product needs to have, so if the candelabrum/candlestick you wish to buy doesn’t have a notation of this type, then it is best to avoid it. Another thing you should look for is the hallmark that manufacturers leave on their products. So, you need to be able to see the place and date of the product’s creation, as well as the name of the manufacturer. Some of the most established manufacturers on this market are Gorham, Michael C.Fina, and Tiffany & Co. Best-quality sterling silver comes from Western Europe and Northern America, while sterling silver that is produced in other countries and areas of the world needs additional testing to assure that it meets the quality standards that are required.
Sterling Silver Vs. Silver-Plated
The choice you make will have a significant effect on the overall experience, as these two types of candlesticks/candelabras are quite different. I will try to address some of those issues right now in order to help you decide properly.
Sterling Silver Candlesticks and Candelabra
In order for candelabras/candlesticks to be properly made of sterling silver, they need to fulfill certain standards. First off, they need to have a certain minimal amount of silver in them. In case the particular sterling silver products appear to have “antic” values, always make sure to check out if there is a hallmark available, because not only that it represents additional proof of quality, it also adds additional data about the value and/or history of the product as well. That being said, sterling silver candelabras and candlesticks from 19th Century (for example) will have a higher price than the modern versions of the same pieces. Their ancient qualities are exactly what make them perfect additions to any home and any setting nowadays.
Silver-Plated Candlesticks and Candelabra
Silver-plated candelabra and candlesticks have only a small amount of sterling silver in them, and it comes in the form of a layer that is placed on the metal surface. Unlike sterling silver, the silver-plated products lack those basic elements and qualities that make them timeless. The sterling silver layer also drains off after some time which makes the whole beauty to fully disappear. Overall, silver-plated candlesticks and candelabras are a good option if you have a limited budget and/or if you are unable to get their sterling silver counterparts for whatever other reason. But, you should also take note that the quality will not be even nearly the same as the sterling silver products.
Choosing the Right Style
Sterling silver candlesticks and candelabras show off supreme quality and also equally evident elegant design. That is why the style is very important and it is a factor that you should always pay attention to when buying one of those products either for yourself or somebody else. Regardless of what purpose it should have, you should always make sure that the style of the candlesticks/candelabras matches the style of the household where it will be used.
A long slender design is the most common solution on the market, but you can find many other alternatives as well. Factors like the mentioned design, ornamentation or size all vary greatly from one product to another. Some also look more “traditional” while others are modern and contemporary.
You can often find sterling silver candelabras and candlesticks designed exclusively for the Jewish population, as historically, the Jewish people are very connected to them, and they had (and still have) a huge part in their religious events and occasions. The same thing applies to other specifically designed candlesticks and candelabras, so you can find Edwardian, Corinthian, Victorian and George II designs as well. The more contemporary products usually have a simpler design and much less details attached to them as well. Very often, though, you will find that these products are often made by using both the sterling silver and some crystal as well (for additional shining effect).
Caring for Sterling Silver
In order to make it as durable as possible and to prevent tarnishing, candlesticks/candelabras need to be used on a regular daily basis. This will also help them develop a particular sparkling effect commonly referred to as “patina”. In order to effectively fight off tarnishing, you also need to make sure to clean the dust as often as possible. If you notice a slight accumulation of grim, make sure to carefully clean them using the recommended techniques and procedures that can be found in the manuals or the internet itself (in the worst case).
Wax Removal and Polishing
The best way to get rid of the wax is to hold your candlestick/candelabra in hot water for an extended period of time. The only potential downside is that you may end up getting some water spots created as well. You can also try to soften it up a bit (the wax) by using a normal hairdryer on a medium heating speed, but make sure not to overheat the composition too much. Once the wax is loosened, you can easily remove it either with cotton balls or a piece of cloth (preferably a soft one). Another good method to remove wax, as well as stains, is to put up some baking soda in hot boiling water and cover that with an aluminum foil.
You should also perform an extensive cleaning and polishing process of every candlestick/candelabra that you own at least once per week. To make things easier, you can use the already mentioned combination of baking soda and boiling water, and/or even a bit of white toothpaste in order to prevent tarnishing. Sometimes it may be required for the candlesticks/candelabras to be stored in specific separate lined boxes in order to effectively fight off scratches and tarnishing.
Washing
Another very common way of maintenance, especially for people who have many candelabras/candlesticks is to wash them in a regular dishwasher. Although it can be very practical, I don’t recommend doing this. The only way to do it somewhat properly is to use a very mild detergent and to prevent putting these pieces on top of one another and/or in the same piece of space, because if this is not fulfilled, you may end up having quite damage to your candlesticks/candelabras.
It is best for these pieces to be washed by using your own hands, a mild soap and water that is warm (but not too hot). After the washing process is complete, make sure to dry it well, as otherwise, you will end up having significant water spots.
Insurance
In case you decide to buy your own candelabra (or candlestick), make sure that it is insured against any potential theft. The insurance policy is very simple for these products and it is regularly carried over by the insurance companies, but the very minimum you will need are some photos of the actual products as well as the appraisal. If there is something more that is needed, you can always contact your insurance company and ask them for the particular bits of information that you need.
