Cat Bowls Buying Guide

Do you want your cat to be healthy and full of energy the entire day? Do you also want your feline side-kick to have a proper bowl to eat from? Not only that you need to pay attention to what your pet is eating, you also need to get a proper food bowl as well.

Although you may think that this is a simple purchase and that there is not a whole lot you need to consider, the reality is far more complex than it looks. But that is why you are not alone in this quest, we will give our best to supply all the needed info and make you buy a perfect food bowl that will make your kitty both healthy and satisfied at the same time.

Ceramic food bowls

If you’re the type of person that places the visual aspect above everything else, these food bowls will suit you (and your cat) perfectly! Not only that there are plenty of different styles to choose from, they are also very simple to clean on a daily basis as well.

On the other hand, although their design may look really pretty, you need to know that they contain some toxic substances that could ultimately harm your cat. I am personally confident that the ceramic bowls that you can find in your local pet store(s) are safe but if you are buying it via the internet and/or especially if it doesn’t have any declaration listed there, you should definitely contact the buyer in order to get the needed (re)assurance.

Also, another thing to be wary of is the fact that they are extremely sensitive. If they end up falling by accident, they will probably be being broken into a couple of hundred tiny smithereens, But that’s not the worst scenario, they can even crack while being in a dishwasher. If you spot even a smallest hole in your ceramic food bowl, get a new one immediately. Various harmful microorganisms develop there and they can only cause harm to your pet.

Plastic food bowls

This is the most reachable type of cat food bowls that you can get on the market. But, if you remember the old saying that you “get what you pay for”, you will quickly find out that the fact that plastic food bowls are the cheapest solutions doesn’t really mean they are also the best ones. They do offer a great durability but they are also very “loved” by the microorganisms in general. This is the type of food bowls that are most prone to the accumulation of bacteria, in fact. Even a single scratch can end up costing both you and your cat quite a lot!

Out of all the chemicals found in these bowls, the one that stands out is certainly Bisphenol. This chemical is commonly found in both the plastic containers and the plastic bowls in general. In this case, it is just yet another hazard lurking to cause damage to the health of your precious pet.

To conclude shortly, avoid getting the plastic bowls at all costs. Just like you should avoid giving your cat the food that can cause harm, you should also save some money for a better food bowl.

Stainless steel food bowls

Maybe they don’t look so “pretty” on the eye, but they offer an outstanding durability and, unlike the plastic bowls, they aren’t nearly as prone to breaking so you can safely put them in a dishwasher.

There is a little downside to note as well. It is documented that stainless food bowls actually emit some of that steel into the food so your cat will get to experience quite a “metallic” taste. It’s not too terrible though and those small quantities won’t cause any harm but it should definitely be taken into account. The good news is this these issue usually get resolved after only a couple of washings.

Stainless steel cat food bowls are definitely my own personal recommendation for you. They offer great quality, an outstanding durability, and they are also 100% safe. The metallic taste is the only issue you would ever face but it goes away once you wash the bowl regularly just a couple of times. Although these bowls aren’t really stunning when it comes to the visuals, after reading the following page, you will quickly get some solid arguments on why the safety should always be your primary concern here.

Glass food bowls

Although these bowls are advertised as “shatterproof”, the reality is completely the opposite. They are very prone to breaking and they don’t offer any durability either. Just like the plastic bowls, these can also end up breaking even while being in a dishwasher. If that happens even in the slightest bit, you need to throw it away immediately because it becomes a great soil for the microorganisms to accumulate and your pet can end up hurting itself.

Their biggest (and maybe even the only) advantage is the fact that they are very simple and straightforward to clean and maintain. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend getting a glass cat bowl but the choice is entirely up to you.

The size

You should dedicate some attention to choosing the proper size of your cat food bowl. It is actually one of the most important factors to consider when getting one. It needs to be big enough to properly store the food and to fit your kitty’s snout as well.

If you are interested in getting a water bowl as well, its size needs to be big enough to contain any liquid poured into it accordingly.

The materials

  • The plastic is cheap and it is the material that is commonly used in making the cat food bowls. But the low price comes with its downsides as they are very “bacteria-friendly” and they are known to emit some toxins that can ultimately affect the health of your pet.
  • The stainless steel offers the best quality, longevity, and is very resistant to breaking. It is also the safest material on the list.
  • Ceramic is fairly tough and it will prevent your cat from moving it around a lot. But it is very easy to break it, even in the dishwasher as well! If that happens, it can end up as a soil for various bacteria to build up. Make sure to take note of this and clean it properly while watching not to break it at the same time.

Special food bowls

  1. Elevated feeders are designed for older animals as it is very common to have jaw issues once a certain age kicks in. These bowls will also help them maintain a good posture as well (or as good as it can really be).
  2. Slow-feeding food bowls are designed to release tiny portions of food at a time to prevent your pet from eating too fast and developing an upset tummy.
  3. Gravity feeder food bowls allow the entire meal to be stored in it at once. If your pet is known to eat a lot, you may want to think twice before buying this bowl.
  4. Electronic food bowls allow you to control the food portion(s) via a specific timer. It is an ideal option to take care of your pet’s food remotely while you are away.
  5. Automatic waterers will provide a constant flow of water (that is filtered and free from all harmful microorganisms).
