The amateur handyman and professional alike include cordless equipment as default in their toolbox. Cordless devices ease stress and strain on hands and arms, particularly towards the end of the working day and can often provide a level of control and accuracy not available with purely manual tools. This can seriously improve the quality and speed of work carried out by the amateur handyman. There is a great variety of equipment available for most common, and some not so common tasks, pitched in a variety of price ranges and equipment standards.
Users need to consider fitness for purpose as a key purchase indicator. Battery life, weight, size and portability make the selection criteria. One other issue is that of power. Some heavy duty tasks need to have a high-power and high-torque capability that might not be available on the lower-priced units. Attachable accessories, for example, sanding pads or a polishing cloth can also swing the choice.
We have prepared a list of what we consider to be the best of breed cordless drills of 2014.

Black & Decker LDX120SB 20-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver with Storage Bag
Black and Decker have been an institution in tooling supplies for many years. One can expect attention to detail, quality of design and manufacture and reliability from them.
This compact unit showcases Li-on battery technology to provide long life and reliability. It offers a range of drill speeds and a hammer action, and it easy on the hand in operation.
To be recommended.
SKIL 2364-02 7.2-Volt Lithium-Ion Drill/Driver
A cheaper variant that also uses Li-on battery technology. It supports a good range of chuck-attached drills and accessories. It supports forward and reverse motion to help you withdraw that stubbornly stuck drill bit. I is claimed to have a standby life of around eighteen month.
Excellent value for money.
Makita LXFD01CW 18-Volt Compact Lithium-Ion Cordless 1/2-Inch Driver-Drill Kit
Again a Li-on based unit. A bit more expensive than the previous items, but sports better engineering in the motor clutch department and has a more effective motor commutator four-pole design. It will last a bit longer under regular use and meets most standard requirements.
Kawasaki 840110 Black 19.2-Volt Drill Kit
This is more of a drill kit than simply a cordless drill. We think you should purchase the drill kit rather than the drill alone, because the additional items are good value, and you will probably need to buy them separately at some point anyway.
The full kit includes the drill itself, a carry case, charger, a comprehensive collection of drill bits, and even a socket wrench. The unit also includes a flashlight. One well worthy of consideration.
Bosch DDB180-02 18-Volt Lithium-Ion 3/8-Inch Cordless Drill/Driver Kit with 2 Batteries, Charger and Case
The DDB180 is more suited to the professional than amateur handyman user. It comes in two Li-On battery variants, the slim and fat pack offering different levels of usage time. The basic kit includes the drill, charger and carry case. The unit itself has two LED lights for use in low-light environments, and about 15 speed settings. It is quite heavy at about 3 pounds, and as we said earlier. More suited to professional than amateur use.
Hitachi DS18DSAL 18-Volt 1/2-Inch Drill/Driver
Very similar to the Bosch above, this high-torque drill is worth considering at a affordable price. Quite heavy at 3.3 pounds it is a professional rather than handyman item. Powered by a Li-on technology, it also has the slim and fat battery options.
Stalwart 75-66007 78-Pc 18 Volt Cordless Drill Set
Similar in quality and spec to the Kawasaki unit, it is work a look. The price includes a carry-case, charger, and a selection of drill bits. The drill itself has an LED flashlight. More for the handyman than professional.
Genesis GCD18BK 18v Cordless Drill/Driver Kit, Grey
An absolutely worthwhile budget cordless and keyless chuck unit for the amateur handyman, at the exceptional price. A popular choice. One very useful feature is the magnetic tray to hold drill bit so you don’t lose them as you work. Comes with a carry case and a two year warranty. Definitely one for the occasional user rather than professional.
DEWALT DC970K-2 18-Volt Drill/Driver Kit
The Dewalt is a mid-range NiCad powered unit for the enthusiastic amateur and professional alike. It is lightweight and compact in design. It is dual speed and comes with a drill/driver, battery, battery charger and soft storage bag for easy transportation. A high rating and positive user reviews on Amazon means that you should have a very good look at the Dewalt as your drill of choice.
PORTER-CABLE PCCK600LB 20-volt 1/2-Inch Lithium Ion Drill/Driver Kit
The Porter cordless drill is an excellent choice. The 20Volt batteries can support a full-day of work without recharge.
The drill has an ergonomic design making it comfortable and lightweight to use. A balanced distribution of weight both above and below the grip means it is easy to control. Nice features are the keyless chuck and a bright LED work light for low-light conditions. I particularly liked the magnetic bit holder on the top of the tool allowing me to work without needing to climb up and down a ladder or fumble in my pocket when I discovered I needed to change the bit.
A drill includes the battery level indicator, a useful feature telling you when it is time to take a break while thePCCK600LB recharges.
