Crib Mattress Buying Guide

If you want your baby to be and feel secure and sleep tightly while being in a car,you can definitely benefit from getting yourself a crib mattress. It’s very easy to get a proper solution; all it takes is a little research on your own. You can ask an expert at your local store or you can just consult the good old Google.

In general, you should always aim for firm mattresses. But that being said, do not think for a second that the overall comfort is not important! Pretty much every model should be firm enough by default but I recommend sticking to mattresses that are designed with a core that has a high level of density and that uses steel springs.

Types of mattresses

  • Foam mattresses: This is the most mobile type of mattresses and the easiest to carry around. You should exclusively look for foam mattresses that have a high degree of resilience and firmness. It is very dangerous to go for a solution that is not firm enough because your child can end up suffocating and/or prematurely dying from issues like SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) so you need to be extra careful!
  • Innerspring mattresses:  This type of mattresses is made by using the combination of coils covered with fabric, padding, and some foam as well. They have a better overall longevity than the traditional foam mattresses and they are heavier as well.
  • Organic mattresses:  As the name suggestions already, these mattresses are made from organic/natural materials only (wool, cotton, organic latex, etc.). They are not “budget friendly” but they are definitely a worthy investment. Also, there are numerous claims that they are safer than the traditional mattresses as well. It is said that the regular solutions all use materials commonly associated as PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ethers) or “flame retardants” and they got the reputation of being very harmful because they release countless toxic gasses. Another complaint is that their texture is harmful in itself by default.  The medical science still doesn’t have a definitive answer to this question but if what you’ve read concerns you, it’s certainly your best bet to stick to organic mattresses and avoid the others.
  • Breathable mattresses:  Although their overall effectiveness is still highly questionable, they are marketed as mattresses that will allow your child to breathe normally even if the mattress ends up covering its face in its entirety. This is supposedly their strongest argument. I haven’t tried them out myself but if you are willing to give them a try, I would recommend getting some additional insights before making the final decision.

The features of Crib mattresses

  1. Foam Firmness:  The most optimal foam mattress is the one that is both resilient and firm enough. What you want to get is the structure that is intact even when/if you are trying to squeeze it violently inside your hand. Your child needs to be safe and you don’t want the mattress to end up covering his (or her) face while sleeping!
  2. Foam Density: It is very tough to describe what you really need to do in order to properly determine a density of a particular mattress but there’s one thing that you can do in practice. Place your hands on each side of the center and then start pressing your palms slowly. If the density is big enough, you will not be able to do it properly.
  3. Innerspring layers:  Speaking of these layers, there is one common thing to note and follow. The more layers you have and the bigger their overall quality is the better for you! Keep this in mind all the time. A better layer quality often results in a greater weight of your mattress as well so that’s another parameter to consider.
  4. Border rods:  What I need to note here is that you should absolutely get a mattress that has border rods and you shouldn’t even bother with a particular model if that’s not the case. Not only that your mattress will be even firmer than usual, it will also have better longevity and some additional support on the edges. Simply put, the edges will not deform themselves if your baby applies pressure on them either by walking or standing on them.
  5. Coil Count and Steel Gauge:  Although the common logic is that the bigger the number of coils is, the bigger the mattress firmness, that isn’t necessarily true. One of the experts from Colgate Juvenile Products explains that the steel gauge is what determines the overall firmness, not the coil number.  You can find some really low-priced models that have about 80 coils and some very expensive ones that consist of as much as 250 coils (or even more). Still, a mattress with 80 coils can end up being firmer than the one with 250 coils. And the reason for that is the steel gauge. A general rule is that the thicker the gauge is, the firmer the mattress. So, a mattress with a lower number of coils can easily be firmer than the one with a higher coil count if its steel gauge is thicker. I would recommend going for thickness values of 15.5 or under.
  6. The insulator pad:  The main purpose of every insulator pad is to keep the coils stable and to prevent them from falling apart. This is a really vital part of every crib mattress because although it may have a good design and although it may be comfortable if the composition is not holding up, those two factors end up being worthless. The secret to every good insulator pad is the coir fiber. This type of fiber is made from coconut shells and although the price is relatively high, it’s definitely worth it. Another good (and cheaper) alternative is a fiber-wrap pad. If you are low on your budget, you can certainly consider using these as well. The worst quality comes with woven polyesters. They have the lowest longevity and they also present a safety concern (because of the mentioned lack of quality), so my advice is to stay away from them.  Some experts say that we can also find hard felt that acts as an insulator as well. It acts as some sort of compressed carpet padding but whether this is a good thing or not is still not widely known.
  7. Cushioning Layers:  The cushioning layers are the next thing to discuss. The high-quality layers of cushion are made from cotton and foam while the lower quality ones are made from polyester. Although you will need to pay more, I would certainly recommend you to stick to the first two types and to avoid the polyester cushioning layers because they have significant issues with durability and after a longer usage, you will see plenty of pockets being created. Make sure to get yourself properly informed before making the final purchase!
  8. The covers:  There are two types of covers to mention here – the vinyl cover and the fabric cover. Although the fabric solution often “breathes” more freely, the aeration is actually better in the vinyl type. On top of that, vinyl covers are able to last a lot and they are highly resistant to various different hazards (including the common ones like stains and tears). My recommendation here is certainly a vinyl cover.
  9. Convertibility:  This is not really an essential feature but it’s a flexible one. You will find many different mattresses with different kinds of convertibility but I’d say that your best bet is a dual-firmness convertible mattress. With this kind of mattress, you will turn your regular crib mattress into an actual bed for your toddler (as he/she gets older). The great thing about these mattresses is that they have a high degree of firmness (very suitable for infants) while they are also cushy enough (which is a very toddler-friendly feature). Many models also have additional memory foam as well. The price of these products can vary and you will generally need to spend some “good” money to get them. But whatever solution you go for, you won’t make a mistake because they are all quality products and they offer huge flexibility for your growing children.
  10. Airflow Pockets: Getting a waterproof crib mattress is a good thing because it will save you from water that causes damage to it but the downside is that it will not get enough air through the surface itself. If this is something that bothers you, I’d recommend getting a crib mattress that has air pockets implemented into it.
  11. Waterproof covers:  Regardless of the downside that I described above, getting yourself a waterproof cover is certainly a good investment because it will save you from excessive water and/or stains. There is no risk that your baby will end up suffocating and it will even protect the surface from baby’s feces and urine. That doesn’t mean that you don’t need to clean it regardless, but it is certainly a good thing to mention.
  12. Antimicrobial Covers:  This type of covers will not completely stop the microbes from ending up on the crib mattress but it will certainly help you fight them off effectively in the long run. Still, I would not recommend buying one such cover. Why? Well, I personally think that there are too many of these “antimicrobial” products on the market already and a regular thorough cleaning should be more than enough to prevent their multiplication. Unless you really want to have a specific cover, my advice is to avoid them.

Notable manufacturers(Brands)

  • Colgate: You probably know Colgate because of their high-quality toothpastes but their crib mattresses are also top-quality products. They have a huge assortment of different crib mattresses and the additional accessories alike. From organic, portable and customization mattresses all the way to comfort wedges, protectors, and covers….the choice is yours!
  • Dream on me: Dream on me is a relatively young American company (their business started in 1988) but they are already one of the most notable brands on this market. Their assortment is a big one, although, not as big as the one provided by Colgate. You can see what they have in store on their website and at almost every juvenile retailer in the country.
  • Natural mat: Natural mat is an English company and it is a part of Kastel International. As the name already suggests, their products are made from 100% natural and organic materials. You can find all of their offers on their official website.
  • Naturepedic:  The whole assortment of Naturepedic is made with an assistance of experts from various different fields (including the orthopedics, the pediatricians, and the chemists as well) and that kind of professional approach is a huge advantage here. The entire process is fully supported by G.E.M. Testing and Engineering Labs. Naturepedic’s product range consists of various different articles from pillows and organic sheets/mattresses to portable crib mattresses as well as queen crib mattresses.
  • Priva Snoozy:  This company is primarily known for their absorbent textures and waterproof products. You can easily reach their products both via the company website and/or any other online shop (such as Amazon or eBay, for example).
  • Pure Rest Organics:  Yet another fairly young company on our list. Pure Rest Organics was founded in 1992 and since the very beginning; they established a good position on the market. They use 100% natural materials in all of their products. Even their factory uses the organic zero-VOC paint. If you visit their website, you will be able to see their entire product range and obtain information related to their purchase. If you wish to buy from them, I would strongly recommend focusing on baby products and pet beddings since those are the strongest products in their assortment.
  • Sealy:  This is a manufacturer with the longest tradition on this list. Their business was established back in 19th century (or 1881 to be more precise) and it was steadily growing over the years. Their best-known patent is the cotton-compressing machine. Their crib mattresses are marketed as Kolcraft.
  • Simmons: Simmons is a truly massive company and they are responsible for a huge number of brands including the Olympic Queen, BackCare, DeepSleep and Beautyrest crib mattresses. There are also children-specific brands included there as well (BackCare baby, BackCare kids, and Simmons Kids). You can easily find their products both online and at your local juvenile retailer.
