Flatbed Scanners Buying Guide
Scanners are no longer a luxury to have in your home and flatbed models, in particular, are well-known for being both high-quality and budget-friendly at the same time. You can enjoy the commodities of scanned images right away. This short guide is crafted to help you determine which flatbed scanner might be your best bet.
The basic features
A vast majority of cheaper and middle-ground scanners support the basic 8.5″ * 11 dimensions for the documents that you are scanning (or 11.7″ to be fully precise). However, if you want to scan some bigger documents, be aware that this “pleasure” will drain your budget quite a bit.
Although the film scanners and the document scanners used to be drastically different from one another in the past, nowadays, they are almost completely the same. Even more importantly, you can get a really good image density even if you decide to buy a lower-end model. For example, if you get a $ 100 flatbed scanner (or even a cheaper one), the image density will range from 1200 x 1200 dpi (dots per inch) all the way to 4800 x 9600 dpi.
I need to note that anything over 2400 dpi will hardly make a difference to a human eye because although our bodies are capable of many unimaginable things, they are not perfectly precise in everything. Also, the bigger number of pixels will result in an increase in the overall file size that you have just scanned which gets to show how much the image density is really useful. There is also a thing called “interpolation”. This method is basically a statistical guesswork on how to use the pixels to increase the overall file size and create a bigger resolution of the scanned image. Since that is, as I said, “a guessing game”, it is not to be taken too seriously and it often creates highly inaccurate color schemes.
The bit depth is yet another parameter that is vital to note. Older models used the classic 24-bit and 36-bit technology to properly scan and retrieve the basic RGB (red-green-blue) information of each particular image. Nowadays, the bit depth is much higher and the scanners are able to capture up to 250 trillion colors with the help of a new and improved 48-bit technology.
The newest addition to the list of the basic features is the OCR (optical character recognition) feature. This feature allows you to scan the documents that contain text as images but they also allow you to manually edit that text in the editor of your choice afterwards. Without OCR, you are not able to do anything with that text because your computer sees it as a regular part of the image that you’ve scanned and as such, it doesn’t allow any manipulations. When buying a flatbed scanner for yourself, make sure that it has OCR support as well (almost all of them do but just double-check to be sure).
Are these scanners user-friendly?
99% of all scanners are made primarily for MS Windows. Some of them will work on Mac as well but that is a very tiny minority. On top of that, there are scanners with some upgrades such as the hinged lids that allow the scanning of more complex documents (like books) and even some 3D scanning as well. In order to get the most user-friendly designed you should look for scanners that have simple concepts and separate buttons for each of its main functions.
- The size: The common majority of all the flatbed scanners that are available on the market support the regular sizes of a typical letter paper document (8.5″ x 11.7″). This is the very standard size but if you need to scan bigger documents on a regular basis, you should certainly consider bigger dimensions. I would personally advise going for higher values if you can as it will allow you to scan bigger documents and to place several smaller pieces and scan them all in a single session.
- CIS or CCD sensor technology?: There are 2 different sensors being used for image scanning – CIS and CCD and their methods are quite different from one another. When it comes to CCD sensors, they have a specific set of different lenses and mirrors that are connected together. Their sole function is to make sure that the reflected light is properly directed to the sensor itself. The whole technical aspect of CCD sensors is way more complex than the one that comes with CIS sensors which results in a drastic increase in price as well. And the overall quality is no different, the images scanned with CCD scanners are slightly above the CIS ones.
- Technical support: When it comes to warranty, you can expect it to last at least 1 full year since that is the standard for this particular industry nowadays. As long as you have that covered, you will be able to contact the support team via the phone (or even by e-mail) for any kind of input or assistance that you may need. Some manufacturers like Epson also have their own FAQs page in order to help their users find the answers to the most common issues without even having to call for additional help. And some companies like Cannon took the support section to a whole new level. They even allow you a product exchange service in situations when you are tight on your schedule and when you need your scanner to be up during the fixed arranged time(s). On top of that, they have a separate support team just for people who don’t hear very well or who are completely deaf. Now that is some serious business!
