Potty Training Seats For Children Buying Guide

Ever thought of doing a potty training with your toddler? Yes? You want to get the best potty chair for this purpose but you are confused and you don’t know what to do? If the answer to this is “yes” as well, then you’ve come to a good place!

Choosing the best potty chair is quite demanding, especially because there are so many of them available out there, and they are all different from one another. But that is why I tried to supply you with as many tips as I could in this short guide, so I really hope they will be useful to you. Have fun reading!

The Potty Chair

The potty chair is an ideal solution for just about any parent who wishes to perform a pony training with his/her child. It is basically a relatively small seat that is built in such a way that it effectively stops the poop and urine from reaching the ground. Once the job is done, you can easily clean up the potty chair and remove the remaining. And you can easily move it around whenever you feel like it, so your child will be able to “ease” itself without returning to a single stationary point all the time.

Now let’s take a look at the good and bad sides:

Advantages:

  • It can be moved anytime and anywhere.
  • Your toddler will be able to touch the ground with its feet and will thus be happy while sitting there.
  • There is no risk of falling off.
  • Your toddler will also be able to sit on its own, and you won’t need to help him/her out when it comes to that.

Disadvantages:

  • You need to wash it and clean the remaining after every usage.
  • Even with a potty chair, your child will still need to get adapted to the standard toilet eventually.
  • Potty chair doesn’t fit tall children, so if you have one – it will be an issue.

Different types of potty chairs

There is a total of 4 types of potty chairs available on the market, and they are all quite different from one another. In the following lines I will dedicate more attention to each of them:

Single piece potty chairs: The name already says it all – This type of potty chairs is made from one single piece of plastic. It certainly gets the job done, but it can be a bit nasty to clean, and not too comfortable to sit on either.

2 piece potty chairs: Unlike the single piece potty chairs, this type of potty chairs is made from 2 different pieces of plastic where one of them is meant to support your toddler while sitting there, and the other picks up all the mess that is made while your child is pooping/peeing. Once the process is finished, you can easily just clean up the remaining on the removable inner piece of plastic instead of having to deal with the cleaning of the entire set.

Deluxe potty chairs

The next step when it comes to complexity is the deluxe potty chairs. They consist of many different elements, namely:

  1. Storage – Highly effective because you can keep your cleaning material nearby and use it as soon as your child has finished with pooping/peeing.
  2. Lights and sounds – An amazing addition here is that once the pooping/peeing process is complete, there is an option to play a particular tune (some models can play actual songs too) or be “rewarded” with a specific light visual effect as well. All that you (and/or your toddler) need to do is press a button.
  3. Deodorizer – A very handy addition that prevents the poop from spreading the bad smell all around before you actually get into a position to react.
  4. Cushioned seat – These seats will make sure that your child is happy and comfortable when it is sitting there and easing himself/herself.
  5. Stickers – Some models, such as My Fun Sticker Potty allow you to put stickers on it, and thus make the potty seat even more visually appealing for your child!
  6. iPad stand – Some of the newest models also have a specific stand with an iPad to keep your toddler properly occupied while sitting there. It may sound funny, but as you can see, creativity is never lacking when it comes to all the different additions being implemented here.

Although it is a general rule that the more elements are included in your deluxe potty chair, the bigger “the mess” that has to be cleaned is as well, these potty seats definitely deserve your attention and consideration.

Multifunction potty chair

Often called multifunctional potty chairs as well, these models can come in different varieties, such as:

  1. 2-in-1 potty chair – classic potty chair with a potty seat that can be removed.
  2. 3-in-1 potty chair – same as the previously mentioned subtype, but with an addition of a step-stool feature.
  3. 4-in-1 potty chair – same as above, but with an extra addition in the form of a storage compartment.

Even though they are meant to serve than their original purpose, and even though I don’t deny the practical aspect of the whole thing, I personally think these potty chairs are not a worthy investment. Chances are – you will end up getting much more from your potty chair(s) if you just buy the classic models. The advanced set is a good idea, but although you have a potty chair for various different circumstances, the whole service is not really a quality one.

In addition to that, they take much more to be cleaned as well. So, if time is vital for you (as it should be), then this is another reason why I recommend avoiding this type.

Potty chair features

When choosing what potty chair to go for, the features are one of the top priorities. Some features are standard, some are additional, but you need to know what you are getting from a particular potty chair before buying it. Let’s go into more details about them right now in order to get a better insight.

The splash guard feature

Splash guard is quite self-explanatory when you look at the name, but anyway – it is an addition that will prevent your kid’s pee from getting out of the potty chair and ending up on the floor and/or other places. The potty training is much easier thanks to this feature, as your toddler will learn how to position properly when sitting as well.

Now, you may end up wondering whether this feature is this useful if you are potty training your little daughter instead of a son. And the answer is – yes! You see, many girls of that age tend to bend forward when they are peeing, which makes the end result completely the same. And that is why splash guard is there to help you out just as much as it is the case with male children.

Stability

Next thing you want to make sure is that the potty chair is reliable and stable at the same time so that you don’t have to worry about your toddler’s poop/urine getting to the floor in any scenario while you are (potentially) absent.

There are 2 major factors to consider here:

  1. The base – Located at the very bottom, this is what basically holds the potty chair from “falling apart”. Basically, the more the base is located on the floor, the harder it is for the content to get out of the potty chair and reach the ground.
  2. The weight – Heavier potty chairs will have a decreased risk of tipping over compared to the lighter models. So, the bigger the weight, the better the reliability.

Types of Potty Seats

There are several different types of potty chairs available out there, and each of them has its own specific attributes that are slightly different from one another. It is your goal to choose the most appropriate one in order to get the best potty training as well. The types being involved here are as follows:

  1. Traditional Potty Seats – These seats are very easy to maintain and they are put on your standard toilet before being used. They can be removed swiftly whenever anyone needs to use the bathroom.
  2. Plastic Potty Seat – This type of potty seats can be very useful in teaching your child how to use the actual toilet. Although it is a bit hard due to its composition, it can be maintained very effectively and with little effort, so it certainly is a solution to consider.
  3. Cushion Potty Seat – In case your little child isn’t able to cope with the plastic potty seat, you can certainly consider getting this one. Unlike the plastic potty seat, this one is very comfortable, and its soft texture will make the time being spent on it a real pleasure. The only downside I can think of is the fact that the cleaning process can end up being quite the pain.
  4. 2 in 1 Potty Seat – These potty seats have an addition of a step stool feature, which is intended to help your little one climb up to it on its own (if possible). You can use it in the same way you use the classic potty seats, and there is just enough room for additional storage.

Advantage & Disadvantage of Potty Seats

Nothing is perfect in this world, but potty chairs are still the optimal solution when it comes to potty training. Even as such, they have their good and bad sides as well, so let’s list these out right now!

Advantage

  • The seating is turned into a smooth and comfortable process.
  • You can easily move them around anytime you like.
  • Although the material being used here is mainly plastic, they still are strong and durable.
  • Your toddler will feel happy while sitting there.
  • You will be able to do something else while your child is doing its business in the meantime.
  • The cleaning process is very easy to perform.
  • They are highly suitable for taller kids as well.

Disadvantages

  • Even with all these advantages, you will still need to make your child adapted to use the actual toilet at one point.
  • Cleaning is easy, but it needs to be done frequently (pretty much after every single usage) in order for it to be effective, and that can turn out to be quite a pain.
  • The plastic seats are very hard in composition which may affect the overall comfort.
  • You need to remove them after every single usage.
  • There is a small (yet realistic) theoretical risk of your child falling off and injuring itself.

Feature of a Best Potty Training Seat

In order to get the most out of your potty seat, you need a seat that has high-quality features and a seat that “delivers” perfectly when it comes to all the basic parameters. These are the key factors that you need to consider before buying one:

  1. Seat – This is what ultimately “decides” how much comfortable the potty seat actually is. Although a vast majority is made from plastic, you may want to consider getting a cushion potty seat as well.
  2. Seat attachments – Many potty seats have various additional features to improve the overall “quality of life” and to make potty training as easy as possible. One of the most common additions is a Suction Cup that prevents the seat from falling off the toilet it is based on. A cushion seat is also another addition that is intended to relieve the discomfort that may be experienced due to the hardness of the plastic seats.
  3. Easy removal and storage – These two features work together and must be viewed as a single factor. The fact is that potty seats need to be moved all the time and be placed in a toilet before using, so you want the removal to be as easy as possible, and you also want the seat to be as mobile as possible as well. If even one of these features is not meeting the required standards, then you certainly need to ask yourself whether a particular seat is worth your money.
  4. Splash guard feature – This is pretty much a must if you have a male child. Male children can’t really control their pee at a young age, and while sitting on a potty seat, they may easily end up splashing it all over the floor………and/or in worst case – even yourself! A splash guard is a feature that will prevent that from happening. Although it is not so important for female children, they also tend to pull their pelvis forward when peeing, so it may result in exactly the same thing. Splash guard is thus a very important feature in either case.
  5. Stability – You need your potty seat to be as reliable as possible so that your child can also do its work without your assistance. That will not be achieved if the potty seat is not properly attached to the toilet. It is recommended to use the potty seats that have a bigger weight, and potty seats where the base has a huge contact with the floor.
  6. Material – You need the material of your potty seat to reflect the quality and to have a good longevity as well. Plastic seats are the default ones on the market, and they are indeed the most durable seats as well. Comfort is very important as well, and if your child is not feeling good while sitting on a plastic seat, you can consider getting a cushion alternative as well.
  7. Design – In order to motivate your toddler to potty, you need a good children-friendly design to encourage that. Colorful and cheerful styles will do this perfectly. Avoid using dark and gloomy themes for your seat and try to find something that automatically stimulates happiness, because it will pay off in the end.

Conclusion

Potty chairs are undoubtedly the best solution for an effective potty training of children. Your child will learn proper potting and it will feel comfortable every time it sits there. I hope that this short overview helped you out at least a little bit, and I am crossing my fingers for you to choose the best solution for your child. Feel free to leave some feedback anytime!
